Wow! What a day. On Sunday, August 15, 2010, the office of Orientation and First-Year Experience presented
the Class of 2014 to the North Carolina Central University community. As an alumnus of NCCU, I had
heard of this program and wanted to attend for many years. I finally had the opportunity to do so and boy,
was I in for a treat. The gathering of alumni prior to the event beginning was warm and welcoming.
As the freshman class gathered, I reflected fondly on my first days at NCCU. As a 17 year old freshman,
I was away from home for the first time. I was excited and nervous, anticipating the joys and struggles
of college life. I saw those same emotions on the faces of these students. Director
of Undergraduate Admissions Anthony Brooks shared this group came from 35 counties in North Carolina and many states within
the U.S. The keynote speaker, Dr. Derek Greenfield, was outstanding. He encouraged the
students to team (with others), dream (big dreams) and scheme (make a plan for success). He
captivated the student's attention, motivated them and promised to see them again. Tania Davis, the President
of NCCU Alumni Association, challenged the students to adopt 5 habits to become successful eagles. Her
challenge included learning how to study, calling NCCU by one of its official names (so not to be confused with the Central
prison in Raleigh), and commit to staying on campus and not going home at the first sign of "home sickness". And
WOW! The band! The Marching Sound Machine sounded better than ever. Several other officials
that spoke encouraged students to get involved and embrace their new "Eagle Pride!" Finally, it was time
for the pinning. The alumni, petite eagle pins in hand, took off in search of these bright-eyed teens,
standing in expectation, waiting to be pinned. I pinned eight students, all females. As
I placed the pin, I hugged them, welcomed them to NCCU and the eagle family. I told each of them they would
have a wonderful year. I was fortunate enough to pin two young ladies from my home state of Maryland.
I gave them extra hugs and told them not to go home until Thanksgiving. As I walked back to my seat,
I wondered about those young ladies I had embraced today. How would their experience go? Would they last
all 4 years? Would they come to love NCCU as much as I have? The ceremony closed with the Alma Mater and
people filed out into the hot August air. I would not trade this day for anything and will make this my
new "end of summer" celebration. Thank you NCC, for another wonderful memory.
